The Issue

Every day, navigating the intersection of Marine Drive and Convent Lane in Torbay, NL is a precarious adventure for me and countless others. The visibility at this junction is severely compromised by the winding road, a challenge that becomes even more treacherous when approaching from both the North and South side of Torbay Road. Knowing that children from the Elementary school on the east side of Torbay road cross this intersection to attend the history house on Convent Lane, I am compelled to speak out before any potential tragedy occurs.

This intersection isn't just an inconvenience; it poses a real danger to the safety of everyone who uses it. According to traffic studies and local statistics, intersections with poor visibility due to natural and infrastructural restrictions have a significantly higher rate of accidents and near-misses. In Torbay, where our community continues to grow, ensuring the safety of our roads is paramount. Installing either a roundabout or traffic lights at this critical intersection would greatly enhance safety, reduce accident risks, and improve traffic flow.

A roundabout could naturally calm traffic, provide clarity on right-of-way, and reduce the likelihood of severe collisions. Alternatively, traffic lights could manage the flow more effectively during peak hours, ensuring every vehicle has a fair and safe opportunity to cross or turn at the intersection.

We call upon the Torbay town council, transportation authorities, and local government representatives to prioritize this issue and act swiftly. The cost of inaction is far too high, and our community deserves safer roads. Implementing a well-structured traffic control measure at the intersection of Marine Drive and Convent Lane will not only protect lives but also foster a greater sense of security and community well-being.

Please join me in advocating for this crucial infrastructure improvement. Sign the petition today to make a difference in our community's safety and future. Together, we can ensure that our roads accommodate the well-being of all residents and visitors.
