A tragic incident occurred recently when a Hudson Academy student, riding their bike to school on Kitten Trail, was struck by a vehicle and lost their life. This road is pitch black with no sidewalks, posing a significant risk to students who walk or ride bikes to school. The lack of proper lighting and pedestrian infrastructure has already claimed one young life - we cannot allow it to claim more.

In the United States, over 6,000 pedestrians were killed in traffic crashes in 2017 alone (National Highway Traffic Safety Administration). Furthermore, the National Safety Council reports that the risk of fatal pedestrian accidents is 3 times higher at night. These statistics highlight the urgent need for street lights and sidewalks on Kitten Trail.

We are calling upon our local government in Hudson, FL to take immediate action. We demand that street lights be installed along this route to ensure visibility during early morning or late evening commutes. Additionally, sidewalks should be constructed for safe passage of students walking or riding bicycles.
