I live near the intersection of Leavitt and Randolph Street and Randolph and Grant Street, and every day I witness the potential dangers that come with its lack of proper traffic regulation. A traffic study was done at this intersection the study says that these intersections do not require any traffic control such as STOP or YIELD signs.  They say this area does not have enough traffic.  I see the traffic and pedestrians, including families with young children, elderly residents, kids waiting to catch the bus to school or dropped off from school and cyclists. Unfortunately, without a STOP or YIELD sign, drivers don't slow down and look at this intersection, oblivious to the risks they pose.

According to Safiah Elahi, the city of Waterloo Traffic Operations Director, they have reviewed the five-year crash history for each intersection. They recognize that crashes have occurred, particularly at Randolph Street and Grant Avenue. And they make no mention of the accidents at Leavitt and Randolph. They evaluated the intersections using the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), which provides national standards and guidance used by transportation agencies to determine when traffic control devices, such as STOP and YIELD signs, are appropriate. Safiah Elahi said in an email to me that Based on the traffic data, crash history, field observations, MUTCD guidance, and engineering judgment, the study did not find that additional STOP or YIELD signs are warranted at these intersections at this time.

 In our neighborhood, we have seen several near misses and incidents or might have even been involved in one that could have led to serious injuries or worse. Installing STOP or YIELD signs at these intersections is a simple yet effective solution. It would force drivers to stop or slow down and be more aware of traffic and pedestrians.

I'm sure there are intersections with less traffic than the ones listed here that have stop or yield sign installed at them. I'm sure we've all seen or heard about accidents happening at these intersections. We've gone to long without something to protect us and our families. This measure could significantly increase the safety of our streets, ensuring that traffic is controlled so that us and our families feel safe driving these intersections, walking their children to school, or the children that walk to these corners to get picked up or dropped off by the bus for school, residents can cross without fear of being hit, and cyclists can navigate the area without risking their lives. 

We need immediate action from our city council to approve and install a stop sign at this critical crossing.
