My father and I have a personal story to share. On Monday, October 28th, 2024, we were victims of a car accident and were rear-ended near West Bloomfield High School which resulted in both of us being hospitalized. This incident has left an emotional mark on our family, and it also brings attention to the need for appropriate traffic control near schools. Accidents near school zones are not uncommon. According to data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, from 2006 – 2015, there were 301 school-age children (18 and younger) killed in school-transportation related crashes (NHTSA). We believe that the implementation of speed limit signs or slow down signs in front of schools will greatly aid in reducing the prevalence and severity of these crashes. While there is a speed sign near West Bloomfield Middle School, about two miles away, there is nothing near WBHS. It is essential for the safety of students, parents, teachers, and local residents to have better speed management in these areas.
