Install speed humps on Pierpont Boulevard for safety
Install speed humps on Pierpont Boulevard for safety
The Issue
I recently had a hip replacement, and during one of my rehabilitative walks with my dog to the local park, I encountered a terrifying experience that could have been avoided. While I was crossing Pierpont Boulevard, a motorist came speeding down the road and barely managed to stop before turning onto Greenoch, narrowly missing me. If speed humps had been in place, the driver would have had no choice but to reduce speed.
Pierpont Boulevard is a bustling area in Ventura where residents, families with young children, and pedestrians frequently walk and cross the streets. Despite being a residential area, vehicles often travel at dangerously high speeds, posing a constant threat to everyone's safety. Installation of speed humps has proven to be an effective measure in controlling traffic speeds in similar settings, like the Keys. By implementing a similar solution here, we could significantly enhance the safety of all who live and frequent the area.
We propose that the city of Ventura install speed humps a block before and after Seaward Avenue, a block before and after Pierpont Elementary School, and a block before and after Marina Park. These locations are high-traffic zones that are particularly vulnerable to speeding. Speed humps will not only enforce safer driving speeds but will also act as a deterrent to reckless driving habits, ultimately fostering a safer neighborhood environment.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speed is a critical factor in approximately 26% of all traffic fatalities. By reducing vehicle speeds, speed humps contribute to fewer accidents, less severe injuries when accidents do occur, and, most importantly, they save lives.
In the Keys area, where speed humps were installed, there has been a noticeable reduction in incidents, and the community feels safer and more livable as a result. We can achieve the same level of peace of mind and safety on Pierpont Boulevard by taking proactive measures now.
We urge the City Council of Ventura to prioritize the safety of its residents by approving the installation of speed humps on Pierpont Boulevard. Sign this petition to support this crucial initiative and make our community safer for everyone.
