Residents of Amsterdam Drive in Olivedale, Johannesburg, are being directly endangered by reckless speeding along our road. This is a quiet, residential street with families, children, joggers, pet owners, and domestic workers constantly walking along the verge. Yet, it has become a speeding corridor for careless drivers. Just recently, my cat was tragically killed by a speeding vehicle; an event that could just as easily have claimed a child's life. This is not an isolated incident, but part of a growing pattern of disregard for safety in our neighborhood.

If nothing is done, the risk will only grow; making our street increasingly unsafe and traumatizing for those who live here. Without speed humps or traffic calming measures, we may face more injuries, fatalities, and emotional distress. However, by acting now, the City of Johannesburg and the JRA have the opportunity to preserve the safety and quality of life for all Olivedale residents and prevent further tragedy. Implementing speed control could mean the difference between a thriving, walkable community and a dangerous, fear-filled environment.
