The Issue

In the peaceful enclave of the Montavilla neighborhood in Portland, Oregon, a growing nuisance threatens the tranquility and safety of its residents. Specifically  SE Washington Street --running between 82nd Avenue and the I-205 south ramp -- has become a hotspot for racing and high-speed driving, posing an imminent danger to local pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. It has become a frequent occurrence at all hours of the day and night.

This residential street, meant to be a safe passageway for families, children, and seniors, is now ridden with the deafening roars of speeding vehicles. These reckless acts not only disrupt the serenity of the neighborhood but also place lives at risk every day. Statistics indicate a rising trend in accidents related to speeding in urban areas, making it imperative to take immediate action.

We respectfully request that ODOT and PBOT take immediate and long-term actions to address this danger. Specifically, we ask for:

1.) An official traffic and speed study on SE Washington St to determine current traffic speeds, volume, and the 85th percentile rate. This data should inform subsequent safety and enforcement actions.
2.) Installation of automated speed enforcement cameras or other technologies to deter and penalize excessive speeding.
3.) Increased police traffic patrols or targeted enforcement during peak speeding hours.

Please, join us in showing the strength of our community’s voice. Sign this petition to urge ODOT and PBOT to act swiftly in safeguarding our neighborhood from these dangerous traffic behaviors. Together, we can bring back the calm and safety of Washington Street for everyone.
