The Issue

Imagine standing on the corner of King Street & Moorside Road, waiting at the zebra crossing to cross, your heart pounding as cars whiz by at alarming speeds. This is a daily reality for the residents of our community here in Drighlington. The zebra crossing near the pharmacy is located on a blind corner, making it extremely hazardous for pedestrians. Many individuals, including myself, have experienced near misses with speeding cars that fail to brake in time, and some not even stopping.

King Street has become notorious for speeding vehicles, and the risk it poses is unacceptable. Without proper measures, it is only a matter of time before a serious accident occurs. The community is anxious and worried for the safety of their families and the many pedestrians who use this route daily.

We propose two immediate actions: first, install speed cameras along King Street to deter drivers from exceeding speed limits. According to the UK Department for Transport, speed cameras have been proven to reduce speeding incidents by as much as 70%. They are an effective deterrent that will enhance safety for all road users. The installation of speed cameras in this area is essential to protect our community.

Secondly, the zebra crossing needs to be moved to a safer location where visibility is not obstructed. The current position near the pharmacy is perilous for both pedestrians and drivers. Relocating the crossing to a more visible section of the road will minimize the risk of accidents and provide a safer crossing point for everyone, especially children and the elderly.

We call upon the local council and relevant authorities to prioritize the safety of their citizens by taking these actions swiftly. This intervention is not just necessary; it's a responsibility to the people who call this area home.

Please help make King Street safer for everyone by signing this petition. Your support could be the change we need to prevent future tragedies.
