Install Speed Bumps to Protect Local Wildlife on Our Roads

The Issue

Personally, I witness an alarming amount of casualties amongst our local duck population due to hazardous driving conditions on our roads. Cars, lorries and vans whip past without a second thought, leading to tragic outcomes for these defenseless creatures. This pain is felt acutely in our community and it's a sight no one should become accustomed to. This morning I witnessed a poor duck being struck by a van I was following and the van never attempted to brake even when it had hit the duck. The sight of that brought me deep shame and disappointment for the driver who was presumably totally unaware.

It's clear that an intervention must be made. We urge the local council to install speed bumps on this road as an effective solution to curb this deadly trend. According to a study published in "Accident Analysis & Prevention," speed bumps are proven to decrease fatal accidents by an astounding 45% (Accident Analysis & Prevention, Vol 40, Issue 3, May 2008, Pages 907-912).

More speed bumps would drastically reduce the speed of vehicles, allowing our ducks a safer crossing. This isn't just about the ducks. Other critters in our community will benefit from these changes too. It's time to uphold our responsibility as stewards of the natural world we coexist with.

The particular road in mind today is messingham road, along the A159 in Scotter as it intersects the bridge over the river Eau.

Please, join us in this mission and sign this petition to help protect our local wildlife from avoidable catastrophe.
