Install Speed Bumps on Pacific St. between Albany and Troy!
The Issue
We love our block and we love our neighbors. But reckless drivers threaten the safety of our block. They frequently speed down our street to bypass traffic on Atlantic or in a rush to beat the green light. The result? Our block has witnessed multiple accidents over the past several years, including a pedestrian getting hit. It seems like only a matter of time before someone is seriously injured or worse.
We're thrilled that the city is turning Bergen Street into a bike boulevard, but we also worry this will only increase the number of reckless drivers using Pacific as an alternative route.
Such high-speed driving in residential areas is unacceptable. In 2024, New York saw a 15% increase in pedestrian deaths, all of which were preventable. Speed bumps can effectively control speed and have been proven to reduce accidents by up to 45% (source: Insurance Institute for Highway Safety).
We, members of PAT Block Association and residents of Crown Heights, believe in New York City's Vision Zero. We want safe streets to live on.
Our block isn't a highway or a shortcut around Atlantic Ave. We're a community that deserves respect and safety. We implore the municipal authorities to install speed bumps and ensure we, and our children, no longer have to fear vehicles speeding down our street in a fatal rush to save minutes. Your support can help us make our streets safer for everyone. Please sign this petition and join us in our plea for road safety.
