Our family has experienced unimaginable loss and heartache due to the excessive speeding on Main Street in Ashford, Alabama, between N Broadway Street and Sixth Avenue. On October 31, 2023, we tragically lost our beloved dog, Nova, when a truck with a bed full of children recklessly sped through. Almost 2 years later, on October 5, 2025, we faced another heartbreaking loss as our dog, Stormie, was struck by a recklessly speeding truck. Despite our rush to the closest emergency vet in Tallahassee, FL, Stormie could not be saved. Most terrifying of all, our 11-year-old daughter narrowly escaped the same fate, as the truck barely missed her. The fear and trauma these incidents have caused have now left our children scared to be outside their own home.

Main Street is a bustling thoroughfare that connects key parts of our community. However, it has become increasingly dangerous due to vehicles disregarding speed limits. While drivers race through, families living along this street remain at constant risk and fear. The absence of speed control measures, such as speed bumps, has made it difficult to ensure the safety of pedestrians and pets.

Speed bumps have been proven to reduce vehicle speeds and enhance the safety of residential areas. According to the Federal Highway Administration, speed bumps can reduce the speed of vehicles by 5 to 10 mph, significantly decreasing the risk of accidents. In other towns similar to Ashford, the installation of speed bumps has led to safer streets and peace of mind for families.

We cannot afford to wait for further tragedies before taking action. The safety of our children, pets, and community members should be our top priority. By installing speed bumps, we can greatly reduce the risk of accidents and protect our loved ones.
