The Issue

Every day, the safety of our community members, especially our children, bike riders, and pedestrians, is put at risk on Corsicana Avenue and Alamo Drive in Abilene, TX. Despite the posted speed limits, many motorists continue to speed, endangering lives in this residential and school zone. Recently, there was a hit and run on Thursday March 12th. Then on Friday March 13th, there was a deadly crash on Hartford-Corsicana. Also, Sunday March 15th at 4 a.m. there was another incident involving several police barricading a driver fleeing that ended up on the driveway of a home on Corsicana, after speeding down Alamo Drive from Denton St.

Corsicana Avenue, stretching from Texas Avenue to South 7th Street and Alamo Drive is a bustling corridor in our neighborhood. It's lined with homes, a Scarborough park, and a school that are frequented by families and children every day. Unfortunately, careless speeding has become a frequent occurrence here, making it an unsafe area for our loved ones. We have witnessed numerous close calls involving children on their way to school and cyclists commuting for fitness or leisure.

Speeding is not just a nuisance; it is a proven hazard. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, higher speeds reduce a driver's ability to steer safely around curves or objects in the roadway, extend the distance necessary to stop a vehicle, and increase the distance a vehicle travels while the driver reacts to a dangerous situation. By reducing vehicle speeds, we can significantly decrease the likelihood and severity of accidents.

The installation of speed bumps is an effective and immediate measure we can take to deter speeding. Studies have demonstrated that speed bumps can reduce average traffic speeds in residential areas by 10 to 20 mph. This simple yet effective tool can transform Corsicana Avenue into a safer place for everyone. It acts as a physical reminder for drivers to slow down and respect the safety of pedestrians and bikers.

We urge the City of Abilene to prioritize the safety of its residents by installing speed bumps on Corsicana Avenue. Taking this step will not only protect our community but will also set a precedent for other neighborhoods in Abilene that may face similar issues.

Join us in making Corsicana Avenue a safer place for our children, our families, and all who live, work, and visit this area. Please sign this petition to show your support for the installation of speed bumps and help us make a positive change in our community.
