Install Speed Bumps for Child Safety in front of Katherine Dunn Elementary School
The Issue
Dear Reader/ Neighbor/ Fellow Parent,
Children's safety is not negotiable, and it’s time we took proper measures to safeguard their well-being. In front of Katherine Dunn Elementary School there is an alarming issue endangering children each day. The elementary school is located on a bustling street where vehicles are ignorant of the speed limit and stop signs, having a complete disregard for the school zone and crosswalks provided for children’s safety. Tragically these incidents have led to accidents involving children being hit by cars every year, the most recent being this November. Katherine Dunn also offers a convenient Pre-K program for children aged 3-5 years old from 9:00am-11:30am and 12:30pm- 3:00pm. Unfortunately, every day during pick up a variety of high school students speed through the school zone to get home. Unintentional pedestrian injuries are the fifth leading cause of injury-related death in the United States for children ages 5 to 19. In the U.S. more than 40 kids are hit by a vehicle while walking every day. That’s more than 15,000 children injured each year. What is a cheap solution to this very real problem of child safety being ignored?
Implementing Speed Bumps.
Speed bumps would not only be a cheap and efficient way to slow the flow of traffic, but also serve as a much-needed reminder for drivers to prioritize safety over speed. It's our duty as a community to ensure that our youngest, most vulnerable citizens are safe on their way to school. Let's convince the relevant authorities to install speed bumps outside Katherine Dunn Elementary School.
