The Issue

I live in a neighborhood in Massachusetts where the streets are filled with families, children playing, and community members walking their pets. However, safety is a significant concern on these roads. Too often, vehicles zoom through the streets with little regard for the safety of pedestrians and cyclists, putting everyone at risk.

On September 22, 2026 at approximately 4pm EST a 16 yr boy in Taunton, Massachusetts was struck by an ongoing car while he was on his skateboard. This road lacks the signage to indicate the speed limit. There are lots of roads in the state of Massachusets that are dangerous because of cars who drive over the speed limit in residential areas. State data shows that speeding is a primary factor in roughly 29% of all fatal motor vehicle accidents across Massachusetts. These accidents are preventable with the right action in our community.

Massachusetts ranks high among states with dense residential neighborhoods, yet many of these areas lack basic traffic control measures that could significantly enhance safety. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, proper signage and traffic calming measures can reduce accidents by up to 45%. This is particularly important in residential areas where people need to feel safe and secure within their own communities.

Busy residential roads, like those in our neighborhood, should be equipped with speed limit and yield signs to ensure drivers are aware of the need to slow down and yield to pedestrians. These simple yet impactful measures can drastically reduce the risk of accidents and create a safer environment for families.

By implementing these signs, we can remind drivers of the need to maintain a safe speed and yield to others, reducing the potential for accidents and injury. Other localities around the country have successfully implemented such measures, often accompanied by community awareness campaigns, to improve public safety and community well-being.

Moreover, the cost associated with installing these signs is minimal compared to the potential consequences of failing to act. Many towns and cities have accessed federal or state transportation safety grants to fund these initiatives, which means it’s a practical solution for enhancing road safety in our community.

Let's urge our local government officials and transportation departments in Massachusetts to prioritize our safety by requiring speed and yield signs in busy residential areas. These changes will protect not only our children and neighbors but also enhance the quality of life for everyone living in these vibrant communities.

Please join me in taking this necessary step towards making our streets safer for our friends, family, children, and the elderly.
