Install special marker lights in the Severn Tunnel at the exact point below the M4 bridge!

The Issue

Whenever I've travelled through the Severn Tunnel from England to Wales, I have always wondered about the exact moment my train is crossing directly under the M4 motorway bridge (known as the Prince of Wales bridge). This is more than mere curiosity—it’s about the thrilling connection of being directly under such an iconic structure from a unique vantage point within another iconic structure. Yet, because GPS signals can't penetrate the tunnel, it's impossible to pinpoint the exact moment of this alignment, apart from gauging by timing and approximation!

Imagine having the ability to synchronise these two travel experiences—road and rail—through something as simple as a series of marker lights. Installing special lighting at the exact spot where the Severn Tunnel intersects with the M4 bridge directly overhead would not only satisfy my curiosity but also enrich the journey for fellow passengers who share the same intrigue about the world outside our train's windows, and make a regular train traveller's journey more interesting than just a boring tunnel!

This proposal isn't just for us, the curious travellers - it's an enhancement for all commuters and travellers, showcasing engineering marvels and offering an educational perspective on infrastructure intersections. Modern technology allows us to do this with ease—reliable LED marker lights could serve this purpose, powered sustainably via solar energy or existing railway electrification.

The Victorian Severn Tunnel is already a testament to human engineering - let's add another layer by highlighting the exact moment it meets the M4 bridge directly overhead. This could become a landmark event for travellers and a point of interest for rail enthusiasts, educators, and tourists.

Such an installation is not beyond reach and would not disrupt the current operations within the tunnel (as it has been closed many times for electrification, particularly in 2016). Compared to its benefits in providing an enriched travel experience and fostered appreciation for transport infrastructure, the investment is minimal and definitely possible!

We urge Network Rail, alongside the authorities managing the M4 bridge, to consider this proposal. Together, we can make train journeys through the Severn Tunnel even more memorable and enjoyable!

If you believe in enhancing our travel experiences and making our journeys more informed and enjoyable, please sign this petition to advocate for the installation of special marker lights within the Severn Tunnel at the point directly below the M4 bridge!!
