Install signal traffic lights at Pine and North Wood intersection
Install signal traffic lights at Pine and North Wood intersection
The Issue
Growing up in Florence, AL, I have personally witnessed the dire consequences of inadequate traffic control at the intersection of Pine Street and North Wood Avenue in the 7 Points area. One vivid memory stands out - my mother, sister, and I were driving through this very intersection. As the light signaled us to "Go," an elderly lady unexpectedly made a left turn, leading to a serious accident. My sister, only 9 years old, was in the front passenger seat. She hit her mouth on the dashboard, causing her front teeth to be pushed back and her gums to bleed. The impact gave my mother, my mother’s friend’s son, and me whiplash.
Pedestrians and drivers alike have long known this junction as hazardous, almost like a ticking time bomb. For decades, this intersection has witnessed countless automobile accidents, often involving multiple vehicles. Yet, it remains inadequately controlled with only a single left turn signal traffic light for the eastbound direction, failing to address the danger adequately.
The absence of full signal traffic lights in all directions is not just an inconvenience—it's a risk to human lives. According to statistics, intersections are among the most common sites of traffic accidents. A study by the Federal Highway Administration indicates that approximately 40% of all vehicle crashes occur at intersections. This particular intersection's history of accidents adds to the urgent need for comprehensive traffic signals in all directions.
Implementing a left turn signal in every direction would be a straightforward yet effective solution. This simple addition could drastically improve safety and decrease the likelihood of similar tragic incidents. It is time for the local authorities to prioritize the safety of their citizens by turning this relatively simple fix into a reality.
Please join me in calling for immediate action to install full signal traffic lights at this dangerous intersection. Together, we can urge the city of Florence to make this much-needed change and prevent future accidents. Sign this petition to help make our community safer for everyone.
