The Issue

Growing up in the bustling area around Seckinger High School, I have always found walking home a liberating experience. However, that freedom is often overshadowed by anxiety and fear for my safety. With minimal sidewalks available, I—and many others—must share the road with fast-moving vehicles. Daily, I spot fellow students cautiously treading the narrow edges of Sardis Church Road, dodging traffic, and constantly wary of the speeding cars that carelessly zoom past us.

This situation is not only a hazard to us pedestrians but also an alarmingly overlooked aspect of our community's safety infrastructure. The absence of sidewalks around key areas like Seckinger High School is not just an inconvenience but a serious safety risk. According to a 2019 report by the Governors Highway Safety Association, pedestrian fatalities in the U.S. have increased by 53% since 2009. These numbers reveal a nationwide trend, yet it is our local community where I see the danger firsthand every day.

Moreover, creating pedestrian pathways is a proactive measure that benefits everyone. Not only do sidewalks provide safe access for students, but they also promote physical activity, reduce traffic congestion, and improve the overall livability of our neighborhood. According to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), communities with well-designed sidewalks have a significantly lower rate of pedestrian-related accidents.

By constructing sidewalks along Sardis Church and the surrounding area, we can ensure a safer and healthier environment for all—students, parents, residents, and drivers alike. I urge the Mulberry Ga officials and Seckinger High School administration to prioritize this essential safety upgrade. Let's work together to make our community a safer place, where walking to school doesn't have to involve a risk.

Please sign this petition to support the installation of sidewalks around Seckinger High School. Together, we can create a secure pathway to ensure the safety of our children and create a more walkable, community-oriented environment for everyone.
