The Issue

Too many people have lost their lives to this perilous curve on US 20 near West Otter Lake, Indiana. Despite the alarming number of incidents, our county remains inactive—it feels like it’s only a matter of time before another tragedy strikes. This curve isn’t just a statistic; we hear the terrible accidents as they happen and live with the horror of the unnecessary losses. In 2025 alone, three lives have been tragically cut short and 17 accidents have occurred, all due to the lack of proper safety measures on this stretch of road.

US 20 serves as a critical passage for residents and travelers alike, and ensuring safety for everyone should be a top priority. Simple and effective measures such as installing flashing curve caution signs and a "Sharp Curve" MPH sign can significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Studies have shown that clear, visible signage helps drivers prepare for unexpected road conditions, reducing speed and improving reaction times.

The fatalities and accidents at this curve are not just numbers; they represent human lives lost and families torn apart. If we allow these incidents to continue without taking action, we are implicitly acknowledging that these lives are expendable. But they are not. Every life matters, and we have a responsibility to protect them.

I urge the Indiana Department of Transportation and local county officials to take immediate action. By installing these safety signs, we can prevent further tragedies. Let's come together as a community to demand that our roads are made safer for everyone before more lives are unnecessarily endangered.

Please sign this petition to insist upon the essential safeguards needed to protect drivers, passengers, and pedestrians on US 20. Each signature brings us one step closer to the changes that will save lives. Together, we can make a difference.
