We the undersigned ask that Sunderland City Council take immediate action and install safety mesh around the Wearmouth Bridge. This petition is deeply personal to me as one of my fellow residents tragically lost their 16-year-old son who jumped off this bridge and my family have also suffered similar tragedies. We cannot let any more lives be lost due to preventable incidents.

Wearmouth Bridge holds historical significance for our community and serves as a vital transportation link. However, its open design poses a significant risk to public safety. Without proper protective measures in place, individuals facing emotional distress or struggling with mental health issues may see this bridge as an opportunity for self-harm.

To address this urgent issue, we propose installing safety mesh along both sides of the bridge. This simple yet effective solution has been successfully implemented in various locations worldwide, significantly reducing suicide rates and preventing accidents without compromising the aesthetic appeal or functionality of these structures.

Implementing physical barriers such as safety mesh can lead to a substantial reduction in suicides from bridges. By taking proactive steps now, we have an opportunity to save lives and protect our community from further heartbreak.

Installing safety mesh on the Wearmouth Bridge will not only act as a deterrent for potential self-harm incidents but also provide reassurance for pedestrians crossing the bridge daily. It is crucial that our local authorities prioritize public safety by investing in preventative measures that have proven success rates elsewhere.

I understand that implementing these changes requires financial resources; however, we firmly believe that safeguarding human lives should always be our top priority. I call upon Sunderland City Council to allocate funds towards installing safety mesh on the Wearmouth Bridge without delay.
