The Issue

Living on a dead-end street in Kenosha, Wisconsin with a speed limit of 15 mph might seem like an ideal place for families. However, this hasn't been the reality for many of us, especially when it feels like a race track due to reckless drivers. I am a concerned parent of an autistic child who is an eloper. The constant speeding and dangerous driving behaviors in our neighborhood have intensified my worries, especially since an eloping child could wander onto this hazardous road without warning.

While advocacy for broader change remains critical, immediate action is needed for the sake of my child's safety and that of others in the community. A "Caution Autistic Child" sign could serve as a poignant reminder of the need for drivers to consider the lives they could endanger with their actions. Additionally, a four-way stop at the corner of 17th Ave and 87th Place would significantly curb the reckless driving prevalent in our area.

According to traffic safety studies, signage and appropriate traffic controls effectively reduce speeds and increase awareness in residential areas. It is heartbreaking to think that a child's life could be put at risk due to preventable causes such as speeding. Ensuring our driving practices take into account the most vulnerable individuals, like children with disabilities, is essential for creating inclusive and safe communities where everyone feels protected.

I implore everyone to think of the children who call our neighborhood home, particularly those who, like my child, may not recognize the dangers speeding vehicles pose. By calling on the Kenosha City Council to install these safety measures, we take a proactive step towards making our neighborhood a sanctuary for all children.

Join me in urging the Kenosha City Council to prioritize community safety today. Please sign this petition and help us create a safer environment for all families in our neighborhood.
