This year, Jeffrey Crowe, my fiancé and the father of my newborn son tragically lost his life at the intersection of Slate Lick Rd and US 25 (Mt Vernon Rd). Last month, yet another young man, Jared Vanwinkle, suffered the same tragic fate at this same location. The common thread? A heavily trafficked, dimly lit intersection that has demonstrated a critical need for enhanced safety measures.

Our community implores our local government to install flashing red and caution lights, as well as improve overall lighting conditions at this hazardous intersection, in hopes of preventing further accidents and loss. According to the Department of Transportation, intersections with proper lighting and signalling have a significant reduction in fatal accidents (National Highway Traffic Safety Association, 2019).

The memories of those we've lost and the safety of our community compel us to seek the necessary safety changes at this location. Without proper lighting and safety signals, we're leaving room for future, preventable tragedies.
