Install pedestrian lights at Somerville Rd junction

The Issue

We all love Sutton Coldfield and I fear a serious injury will occur if nothing is done to improve the junction at Somerville Road, Monmouth Drive, and Digby Road. As an activist for residents, I am deeply troubled by the current state of this busy intersection.

The junction's existing road markings may indicate crossing places, but these only serve to guide pedestrians straight into the path of vehicles coming from multiple directions. This oversight is not only hazardous but also life-threatening. Many locals, especially from elderly residential care homes and children going to and from Sutton Park including children on their way to school, are forced to navigate this dangerous junction everyday, often gambling with their safety.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show 498 people were killed or seriously injured on Birmingham's road in 2023, four times the national average. Implementing pedestrian traffic lights here is not just a safety measure; it's a necessity to prevent avoidable accidents.

We urge Birmingham City Council to prioritize the installation of pedestrian traffic lights at the Somerville Road junction. This action is vital for safeguarding our community and ensuring safe passage for all citizens.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a safer Sutton Coldfield for everyone. Let us change this junction BEFORE something tragic happens. Please sign and share this petition to make our voices heard and our streets safer.
