The Issue

The time has come to tackle the problem of obesity. As a resident of Hawthorne, CA, I am deeply passionate about promoting health and well-being within our community. It is with great concern that I address the lack of accessible fitness facilities for individuals who cannot afford expensive gym memberships or daily fees. Therefore, I kindly request the city of Hawthorne to install an outdoor fitness area at Ramona Park.

Growing inflation rates have made it increasingly difficult for many residents in Los Angeles, including myself, to afford the rising costs associated with maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Gym memberships can be expensive for low-income individuals and families, limiting their access to essential exercise opportunities. Providing an outdoor fitness area at Ramona Park can bridge this gap and ensure everyone has equal opportunities to improve their physical well-being.

Furthermore, an outdoor fitness area would serve as a social gathering place where community members can come together and engage in healthy activities. Regular exercise enhances physical health and contributes significantly to mental well-being and overall happiness. By creating such a space within Ramona Park, we will foster a sense of unity among residents while promoting healthier lifestyles.

According to the CDC, regular physical activity reduces the risk of chronic diseases such as heart disease, diabetes, and obesity-related cancers by up to 50%. A report by Trust for Public Land found that parks with active amenities are associated with significant increases in physical activity in communities. The American Heart Association recommends adults engage in at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes per week of vigorous-intensity aerobic activity. The installation of this facility would help Hawthorne residents do just that.

An outdoor fitness facility would be an amazing improvement and investment into our community and would show that the city is interested in the overall well-being and health of its residents.

According to Letsgethealthy.gov, California has the highest obesity-related costs in the United States. If the city of Hawthorne installed an outdoor fitness area at Ramona Park, we would be able to cut those health related costs and invest that money back into our community.

Surrounding cities have implemented a similar facility, as can be seen at the La Cienega Outdoor Fitness Pavillion.

They were able to install equipment that could be used by anyone from any fitness level ranging from teenagers to seniors. The equipment would use the users' body weight which means that no electricity is used and the facility requires very little maintenance.

Ramona Park is a great location for this outdoor fitness facility to be installed. It is located in the middle of Hawthorne, allowing residents from all over to use the exercise equipment and invest in their health.
