As a resident of Horizon West, FL, I have personally witnessed the danger our local roadways pose to the threatened Florida Sandhill Crane. Motorists using Hamlin Groves Trail and Windemere Road, both frequented by these magnificent birds, often fail to slow down and allow them to safely cross. The lack of awareness and caution has put these already vulnerable creatures at further risk.

The Florida sandhill crane is protected by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission due to habitat loss. From 1974 to 2003, potential crane habitat in our state declined by 17%, leading to an estimated population decline of 36%. Despite this alarming trend, many motorists remain unaware or indifferent.

We are calling on the Orange County Government to install signage along roadways frequented by these cranes. These signs would warn motorists about their presence and instruct them to slow down or stop when necessary for safe crane crossings.
