The Issue

Living off campus is a huge part of the TCU experience for a lot of students, but many of the streets in the neighborhoods surrounding campus are way too dark at night.

As a female TCU student living off campus, this is something I notice all the time. There are streets with very few lights, and in some areas it can be difficult to even see what is around you. As a woman, being aware of my surroundings when I’m alone at night is already something I think about, and the lack of lighting makes that even more concerning. Whether I’m walking home from a friend’s house, getting back from a late class, parking my car, or even just taking my trash out at night, I want to feel safe in the neighborhood I live in.

Adding more streetlights is a pretty simple way to make these areas feel safer. Better lighting makes it easier for people to see their surroundings, helps drivers see pedestrians, and can also help discourage crime.

There are thousands of TCU students living in the neighborhoods around campus, many of whom are young women living on their own for the first time. We should be able to feel safe getting to and from our homes at night. This is not just an issue for students either—better lighting would benefit everyone who lives in these neighborhoods.

We are asking the City of Fort Worth to look at the streets surrounding TCU where lighting is limited and add more streetlights where they are needed.

If you’re a TCU student, parent, or Fort Worth resident who wants to see safer and better-lit streets around campus, please sign and share this petition. 💜

Let’s make the neighborhoods around TCU safer for everyone.
