Growing up in West Haven, Connecticut, I cherished every moment spent outdoors in my town. Many of my memories were with friends and acquaintances in the many town-run parks, playing sports.

Now, as a father of four in Fairfield, I'm acutely aware of the recreational needs of our community, especially when it comes to sports facilities. My children are particularly enthusiastic about playing basketball- they participate in various leagues and camps throughout the year. However, the limited availability of basketball courts in Fairfield is a constant challenge for us.

In a town with a population of approximately 65,000, having access to only 1.5 park and recs run basketball courts is not just insufficient but also demoralizing for our young athletes.

Basketball is more than just a game, it's a means for our children to develop important life skills such as teamwork, perseverance, and discipline.  By installing more basketball courts, especially in the beach area, we'd be enriching our community’s spirit and providing a healthy outlet for our youth.

Other towns with a similar population size have realized the importance of investing in recreational facilities. Neighboring towns, like Westport, have more accessible basketball courts, including a beautiful facility at Compo Beach that fosters a vibrant sports culture. It’s time for Fairfield to step up and provide the necessary infrastructure to meet our residents' needs.

We urge the town of Fairfield to consider this proposal seriously.
