This petition springs from the heart-wrenching aftermath of a tragedy that occurred at Apalachee High School. This incident shakes our safe haven that our educational institutions are supposed to be, and resulted in a monumental shift in our community's awareness and urgency in enhancing school security.

The proposal is to install metal detectors in every school within Barrow County. This is to prevent weapons from entering our schools and consequently escalating potential violent acts. According to a 2018 report by the National Association of School Psychologists, a significant proportion of social, behavioral, and academic problems present in schools are due to fears of violence, mostly emanating from weapon-related incidents.

The deployment of metal detectors can be essential in curbing this situation. They are already in use in many schools nationwide, offering an extra layer of security and, more importantly, peace of mind for parents, students, and staff. The National Institute of Justice indicates that schools equipped with metal detectors have significantly lower rates of weapon-carrying students.

However, this security measure needs funding. The plea is to appropriate funds specifically geared towards installing these metal detectors in all Barrow County Schools. With this action, the safety of our children, our very future, can be better assured.
