The Issue

The local pickleball courts have become a vibrant hub of activity for our community. With over 100 avid players, these courts provide not only a place for exercise, fun, and camaraderie but also an oasis of positive community engagement. As the colder months approach, darkness comes earlier each day, depriving players of the few precious hours they have to enjoy this fantastic sport after work or school.

The power of pickleball to bring people together should not be underestimated. This sport, accessible to all ages, encourages healthy living and brings joy to those who play it. However, the absence of proper lighting is severely limiting the court's potential, especially during the winter months when daylight is short.

Installing lighting would extend playing hours significantly, making the courts usable during evenings and encouraging even greater participation. Not only would it continue to foster the thriving community spirit we've built around the courts, but it would also be a step toward promoting healthy activities in our city.

Communities across the country have seen positive impacts from similar initiatives. For example, cities like San Diego and Austin have added lighting to their local pickleball courts, resulting in increased player hours and higher court utilization even in the early morning and late evening.

We understand the need for budget considerations, but the initial cost of installing lights can be offset by the long-term benefits they bring, such as potentially increased revenue from local tournaments and a healthier community. Funding options, including public-private partnerships or grants for community development, could also be explored.

Let's make the court a more accessible and welcoming place for everyone during all hours the community needs. Please sign this petition to urge our city council to install lighting on the pickleball courts. Together, we can shine a light on this issue and keep our community active, connected, and thriving. Please sign and support our cause!

I am pleased to be able to tell you that lights (and shade) were already budgeted for the pickleball courts for this year! Construction should commence soon if it has not already! Matthew Porter, MHA Mayor | City of Wylie
