The Issue

Petition to the City of Tyler & Tyler Parks and Recreation

Faulkner Skate Park is Tyler’s only dedicated skate park and serves youth and families across the city and surrounding areas including students from nearby schools, local families, business owners, church groups, and skaters of all ages.

If you’ve ever driven by, you know it is often packed, with everyone from young children just learning to ride to seasoned skaters sharing the space. The park provides a safe, healthy outlet for physical activity, creativity, skill-building, determination, and community connection.

However, especially during the fall and winter months, the park becomes unusable by early evening due to one major issue: lack of lighting.

Because the park is not lit, skaters are forced to leave early or risk unsafe conditions as daylight fades. Installing proper lighting would improve safety, reduce the risk of injuries, help deter vandalism, and allow the City of Tyler to better utilize an already existing public investment.

OUR REQUEST

We respectfully ask the City of Tyler and Tyler Parks and Recreation to:

  1. Evaluate the installation of proper lighting at Faulkner Skate Park
  2. Explore funding options, grants, or phased installation
  3. Include this upgrade in future park improvement planning
  4. As a future phase, consider evaluating opportunities to utilize the surrounding space to extend the park and better serve the demonstrated demand

WHY THIS MATTERS

Installing lights at Faulkner Skate Park would provide:

  • A safer place for youth and local residents in the evenings
  • More positive recreation options for families and teens
  • A space that encourages discipline, creativity, and community
  • A well-lit public alternative to unsafe or unhealthy activities

This is not about extending hours irresponsibly, it’s about giving local residents and our kids a safe, accessible public space where they can stay active and connected.

CALL TO ACTION

If you believe Tyler’s youth and skate community deserve safe, accessible public spaces, please sign and share this petition.

Tyler invests in its youth and lighting Faulkner Skate Park is a simple, meaningful way to prove it.
