The Issue

Growing up as a student athlete on the track and cross country team in Hamden, Connecticut, I've spent countless hours running on the Farmington Heritage Canal Trail. It's an essential part of our training routine, and we rely heavily on this trail for our workouts. However, despite its role as a vital community resource, increasing concerns about safety have made us feel vulnerable. Both my teammates and I, along with many other locals, have faced harmful and threatening incidents while using the trail. These concerns have reached a point where we cannot ignore them any longer.

The Farmington Canal Trail is a popular destination for athletes, families, and students from nearby schools, offering an accommodation for exercise and recreation. However, its isolation and lack of available emergency assistance pose significant risks. Without immediate access to emergency services, situations can become grand.

One necessary solution is the installation of emergency phones along the Farmington Heritage Canal Trail. Such phones would provide a direct line to local police and emergency services, ensuring the safety of all who use the trail. Many communities across the nation including college campuses such as Yale, have successfully integrated emergency phones into their public spaces, significantly reducing response times during emergencies and providing feelings of safety to their community.

The installation of these phones would not only enhance the safety and security of students like myself and fellow athletes but also encourage more people in our community to make use of the trail without fear. Implementing these changes could serve as a proactive measure and an acknowledgment of the concerns voiced by locals in this town.

We urge the Mayor of Hamden, along with the local police department, to recognize the importance of this safety measure. It is essential for ensuring the well-being of our community members who view the trail as a sanctuary for both physical and mental health. Your support can bring this vital change to fruition. Help us make the Farmington Canal Trail a safer place for everyone.

Responded
I appreciate the request for emergency phones on the Farmington Canal Trail. My son is also a runner for the track and cross country teams and often runs without his phone. I see the need for the emergency phones and have spoken with the Hamden Police Department to see how we can install more phones. We are looking into grant opportunities for the cost of installation. Best Regards, Mayor Lauren Garrett Town of Hamden
