The Issue

Every day, I see the same deer family roaming the wooded areas near White Oak Avenue or crossing the road. Recently, one of the fawns was tragically struck and killed on a nearby road. Although the accident did not occur on White Oak Avenue, it highlights the danger these animals face as development continues to shrink their habitat.

Deer frequently cross White Oak Avenue in search of food and shelter. They have nowhere to go now because of The Preserves neighborhood. Because drivers often travel at high speeds and on this dark road, the lack of wildlife-crossing signs creates a serious risk for both animals and motorists.

Installing deer-crossing signs would alert drivers to slow down and remain watchful, particularly around dawn and dusk when deer are most active. This simple preventive measure could reduce collisions and help protect our community’s residents and wildlife.

We urge the St. John Town Council to install deer-crossing signs along White Oak Avenue before another tragedy occurs. Please sign this petition to help make the area safer for both people and animals.
