In our everyday life, safety is paramount, particularly when it comes to our children. My son, who has Autism Spectrum Disorder and lacks an understanding of danger, has begun to elope frequently. This unsettling behavior puts him at risk every time we visit public parks where unfenced exits & not child proof locks / restrictions pose imminent threats. We urgently need a solution that ensures the safety of children like him.

Public parks should be safe havens for all families. However, without appropriate safety measures, they become potential hazards for children who are prone to wandering. This is especially concerning for parents of children with autism, who often face these challenges. Research indicates that nearly half of children with autism will attempt to elope, and when they do, it's typically towards a preferred object or place, such as a park, where they feel at ease. But without proper safeguards, these familiar places can turn perilous within moments.

We propose the installation of child-proof locks on all external gates of public parks. These locks would not only prevent children from wandering off inadvertently but also provide peace of mind for parents. Child-proof locks are a simple yet effective measure that can prevent a tragedy from occurring. They are already used in various child-centered areas such as daycare / nursery centers and homes to great effect.

Moreover, communities across the nation are increasingly recognizing the importance of inclusive and accessible play areas. Adding these locks aligns with this initiative, ensuring that everyone, regardless of abilities, can enjoy parks safely. It's not a matter of paranoia; it's about proactive planning and acknowledging the needs of every park visitor.
