The Issue

My grandson is autistic, and like many other children with special needs, he deserves a safe and inclusive learning environment. In the San Bernardino Unified School District (SBUSD), special education classrooms support some of our most vulnerable students, providing them with both education and various therapies to help them thrive. As a grandparent, I want peace of mind, knowing that my grandson and other students are in safe and supportive surroundings.

Installing cameras in these classrooms will ensure transparency and accountability, not just for parents but for everyone involved in the educational process. This isn't about creating an atmosphere of distrust but rather ensuring that our children are getting the support and care they desperately need. It also enables school administrators to monitor the quality of education and services being provided.

A study by the National Autism Association has shown that having cameras in classrooms can reduce instances of bullying and improve the quality of education for children with special needs. In another report, schools that implemented such measures saw a 25% decrease in safety incidents and a more positive environment for both students and staff.

The implementation of cameras should be approached with careful planning, respecting privacy for both students and staff. I propose that the cameras only record video during school hours and that the footage is reviewed solely by relevant authorities in cases where safety concerns arise. Audio recording should be omitted to further protect privacy. Consent from parents and guardians should be obtained as an added layer of trust and transparency.

I call upon the San Bernardino Unified School District to consider this important measure and take action to provide a secure environment for all students in special education programs. By signing this petition, you stand with me and countless parents, grandparents, and guardians in demanding a safer and more accountable educational system for our precious children. Please sign and make our voices heard.
