The Issue

As a parent of a non-verbal autistic child, I am deeply concerned about the lack of transparency and safety in special education classrooms. My son recently started kindergarten and within just two months, he's been sent to the nurse's office numerous times without any explanation. He has come home with bites and scratches, and no one can tell me how they occurred. Situations like these are unacceptable; our children need a voice and a means for parents to understand and ensure their safety.

Special education students often cannot communicate their experiences verbally, making it crucial for us to have a system in place that allows us to see what happens in classrooms when we're not there. With the installation of cameras in these settings, incidents can be monitored, and any misunderstandings or accidents can be addressed promptly and effectively. It isn’t about surveilling teachers; it's about protecting and understanding the unique needs of our children.

Data from the National Autism Association indicates that up to 40% of children with autism are non-verbal, which substantiates the need for additional support for both educators and families to ensure a safe environment for learning. Furthermore, given the heightened vulnerability of special education students, it's imperative we have a way to observe interactions and conditions inside the classroom to ensure everyone's safety and well-being.

Some school districts across the United States have successfully implemented cameras in special education classrooms, reporting increased transparency and improved communication between parents and educators. These cameras are not live-streamed but securely stored for review when legitimate safety concerns arise. It's a practical and achievable measure to give a voice to those students who can’t articulate their challenges themselves.

We propose starting this initiative with special education classrooms in our district, with the goal of expanding to all classrooms eventually. For this endeavor to succeed, we require the support of parents, educators, and the broad community. Let’s take this step towards a safer, more transparent educational environment where every child's needs are understood and respected.

These cameras not only protect our students but they also protect teachers from accusations. These cameras are not intended for live stream. They would only be accessible by staff and parents when an incident occurs.

Please join me in advocating for the installation of cameras in special education classrooms. By signing this petition, you're helping by give a voice to the voiceless, and ensuring children like mine can attend school without fear or uncertainty.
