Install cameras in classrooms across the USA

Install cameras in classrooms across the USA

The Issue

My son is nonverbal and has autism. He attends Unit 5 Parkside, and every day I worry about what happens at school because he cannot tell me. While we have cameras in the hallways and on the bus, it's frustrating and disheartening that classrooms remain unwatched. Why are teachers allowed to work behind closed doors with our children with zero accountability? I would love to believe that everyone has the best intentions for the children they teach, but the reality is far from this ideal. As parents, we cannot entrust our children, especially those like my son who cannot communicate verbally, completely to a system that gives us no insight into their daily experiences.

The implementation of cameras in classrooms would ensure greater transparency and accountability. It can serve as a vital tool for parents, especially those with nonverbal children, to understand what their child experiences daily. Moreover, having cameras in classrooms can protect both students and teachers by ensuring that the classroom environment maintains a standard of professionalism and care that every child deserves. This would deter potential misconduct, foster trust, and ultimately create a safer and more transparent educational setting.

Statistics show that in schools where cameras are installed, incidents of misconduct decrease significantly. According to a study by the National Institute of Justice, the mere presence of surveillance cameras in a school environment has been linked with a reduction in bullying and other negative behaviors.

Many might argue that cameras invade privacy; however, these cameras would operate in the same manner as those in public spaces such as hallways or buses, serving only to protect and reassure. Teachers who are giving their best should not feel concerned about being monitored, as transparency is crucial in upholding the integrity of educational institutions.

I urge school boards in Illinois and across the country to take action and consider this crucial step towards ensuring the safety and wellbeing of students. Join me in demanding that cameras be installed in classrooms to ensure our children receive the best and most trustworthy education possible. Please sign this petition to advocate for transparency, accountability, and safety in our schools.
