Install Average Speed Cameras for Safer Road, Bitterne Road West

Install Average Speed Cameras for Safer Road, Bitterne Road West
The Issue
Something urgently needs to be done about the dangerous speeding on our 30mph road. This week, yet another serious crash occurred right outside someone’s home, where lives could easily have been lost due to reckless drivers exceeding the speed limit. This road & this area is home to schools, families, and elderly residents, and it’s only a matter of time before tragedy strikes.
This is just a few examples;
- 6th SEP 2017 - Car overturns in two vehicle collision on Bitterne Road West.
- 23rd NOV 2017 - Bitterne Road West home left damaged after car ploughs into building
- 3rd MAY 2022 - Woman 45 dies after being hit by car on Bitterne Road west crossing the road.
- 13th JAN 2024 - Bitterne Road West speeder caught doing 62mph in 30mph zone.
- 3rd JULY 2024 - Southampton traffic news: Crash on Bitterne Road West
- 10th Oct 2024 - Bitterne Road West garden damaged in Southampton crash (photo below) Young Family Home.
We do need immediate action, whether it’s installing average speed cameras and more 30mph signs. My family, neighbours, and I regularly face abuse from speeding drivers as we try to safely exit our driveways, take children to school, or even cross the street. From horn blaring, shouting, to dangerous overtaking, it's become nearly impossible to feel safe in our own community.
Some may suggest, "just move," but not everyone has that luxury. Factors like life circumstances and affordability often dictate where we live. To suggest we’re "asking for it" because of where we reside is not only insensitive but deeply ignorant. This is a 30mph zone, and drivers must respect that.
Last Thursday horrific crash has pushed our community to the breaking point. We cannot wait for a fatal accident to occur before something is done. Please sign this petition, even if you don’t live on this road—every signature brings us closer to making this area safer for everyone.
This is our personal story shared by many, making our call for change all the more urgent. We propose the installation of average speed cameras on Bitterne Road West. Studies show that these cameras reduce speed variance and, therefore, the risk of crashes. One such study indicates that there's a significant reduction of up to 65% in fatal and serious accidents following the installation of these cameras (Source: Road Safety Observatory, UK). By installing average speed cameras, we can reclaim our streets and make them safe for our families once again. We invite you to join us in our quest for safer streets. Your signatures can bring about this change. Please sign this petition today.
