Install 'Autistic Child Area' Signs in Farmington's Residential Neighborhoods
The Issue
I am a mother of a child on the autism spectrum and I have friends who also have children on the spectrum. There have been numerous occasions when I've found myself and others in the same situation, chasing after our beloved children who have a propensity to elope. This task is even more heart-wrenching when the child is non-speaking.
As members of this community, we understand the challenges families with autistic members face, particularly those who are prone to eloping. For this reason, we are urging the city of Farmington to take immediate action in making our neighborhoods safer for these children. We propose the installation of 'Autistic Child Area' signs in neighborhoods that report high instances of such scenarios.
This simple yet effective measure could greatly contribute to the safety of our children, keeping them safe around dangerous areas like busy streets. According to a study by the Interactive Autism Network, nearly half of children with autism attempt to elope from a safe environment, a rate nearly four times higher than their unaffected siblings (Anderson, et al., 2012).
Autism Allies and I don't merely propose this change, we are committed to supporting this effort actively. We believe these signs would not only add another layer of security but would also contribute to raising awareness regarding the complexities involving children with autism.
The safety of our children is paramount. To the city of Farmington: help us to help our children. Install 'Autistic Child Area' signs in our neighborhoods. Please sign this petition and help us catalyze this necessary change for the safer future of our children.
