The Jericho School District's Board of Education, Superintendent, Assistant Superintendent, and Director of Transportation should prioritize the installation of air conditioning on Jericho School District school buses. 

Currently, many of the school buses serving the Jericho School District lack air conditioning.  The school district has no plans to take immediate action to replace these buses with the ones that have air conditioning installed.  Rather, the district will allow its bus provider, First Student, to replace non-air-conditioned buses only as they become obsolete—meaning air conditioning will be added gradually.  As a result, the district estimates that “most” buses will have air conditioning within two years.

This is unacceptable.  As we saw this past week, the incidence of extreme heat related weather is becoming more common.  Children are especially vulnerable to extreme heat and are more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.  This is especially dangerous in a crowded, unventilated environment, such as a school bus.  

The district should prioritize ensuring that all Jericho students have access to air conditioning on their bus rides to and from school.  This is an issue of health and safety for our children.
