The Issue

As a woman who enjoys walking around the Silverlake Reservoir, I've grown increasingly concerned for my safety and that of others. Despite its popularity, this beautiful spot in Los Angeles has recently been overshadowed by a rise in attacks against women. The fear and anxiety these incidents have instilled in the community are tangible, and one thing is clear: change is needed to ensure our safety.

While some suggest increasing police presence as a solution, I firmly believe that adding adequate street lighting around the Reservoir would be a more effective and positive step. Proper lighting is a basic yet significant deterrent to crime. When areas are well-lit, people feel safer and less vulnerable, and potential criminals are discouraged from committing offenses. Studies show that improving lighting in public spaces can decrease crime rates by up to 21% (source: U.S. National Institute of Justice).

The Silverlake Reservoir is a communal escape for many, a place for reflection, exercise, and social gathering. Yet, the lack of lighting in certain areas creates an unpredictable and daunting environment for women and anyone who chooses to visit, especially during early morning or after dusk.

By installing better lighting, Los Angeles would demonstrate commitment to its citizens' safety and well-being, without resorting to an increase in police presence, which might not yield the intended positive outcomes. Increased lighting offers a non-intrusive solution that guarantees safety without the potential for discrimination or unease that might arise from more police patrolling.

The City of Los Angeles has the opportunity to lead by example, showing that they prioritize the safety of its residents and visitors through modern, less invasive measures. We need action to transform the Silverlake Reservoir into a safe zone for all at any hour.

Let's stand together in urging the City of Los Angeles to prioritize and expedite the installation of adequate street lighting around the Silverlake Reservoir. Sign this petition to demand change and help ensure a safer environment for everyone. Your support could make all the difference.

The Silver Lake Reservoir is a space that so many people rely on, and everyone should feel safe there at any time of day. No one should have to think twice about whether it’s safe to be in a public space like this. Improving lighting is a simple but important step we can take to make that a reality. We’ve already directed our CD13 Bureau of Street Lighting team to assess the area and repair any outages around the reservoir. Because the reservoir sits at the boundary of two council districts, we’ve also made it clear that our crews should address issues on the CD4 side as well, so the entire space is covered. We’re committed to continuing to work with the community to identify additional improvements that make the reservoir safer and more accessible for everyone. — Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez
