The Issue

Every day, hundreds of children walk along Sandringham Crescent to and from three local schools and need to cross the road, alongside countless local residents and other pedestrians, but there is no zebra crossing, traffic-light-controlled crossing or other designated safe crossing point for over one mile.

Children are therefore required to cross a busy road without a clearly designated and protected place to do so anywhere between Chiltern Road and Craiglands.

We, the undersigned residents, parents and members of the local community, call on Hertfordshire County Council and St Albans City and District Council to provide a safe pedestrian crossing on Sandringham Crescent, specifically a zebra crossing or traffic-light-controlled crossing to protect the hundreds of children who cross this road every day.

We are aware that a survey regarding the speed limit on Sandringham Crescent is being considered. While reviewing the speed limit may be helpful, this alone does not address the main safety concern. A speed-limit review does not provide children with a safe place to cross the road.

There have also been serious safety concerns at this location, including incidents involving drivers failing to stop or slow down to allow children to cross. Video evidence of dangerous driving has previously been provided to the Council.

A serious incident involving a child occurred at this location last year, demonstrating that these concerns are not theoretical. We believe preventative action should be taken before another serious incident occurs.

We are therefore asking Hertfordshire County Council and St Albans City and District Council to:
• Assess and provide a suitable pedestrian crossing on Sandringham Crescent in the proximity of Chiltern Road or Jersey Lane, such as a zebra crossing or traffic-light-controlled crossing ;
• Take into account the number of children using this route to access the three local schools;
• Consider the existing safety concerns and previous incident at this location; and
• Take action to provide children and other pedestrians with a safe and clearly designated place to cross the road.

Our children should be able to walk to and from school safely. A zebra crossing or traffic-light-controlled crossing would provide a clearly designated and safer place for children and other pedestrians to cross Sandringham Crescent.

Please support this petition and ask Hertfordshire County Council and St Albans City and District Council to take action.
