The closure of the A379 main road through the village has resulted in all the traffic using New Road. It's highlighted just how dangerous it can be for children going to and from the village primary school, especially as there is no Zebra crossing. This isn't just about children; it's about ensuring the safety for the entire community.

The absence of a Zebra crossing puts everyone at risk, particularly during peak hours when traffic is at its heaviest. Parents, teachers, and local residents have all expressed their concerns about the speed of traffic. We also know that it's likely the main road will be closed again at some point in the future, whether it's for an emergency, a road accident or utility works.

By installing a Zebra crossing, we can implement a simple yet effective way to ensure that children especially, can cross New Road safely to get to and from school and the playing field.

Along with my Teignbridge colleague, Cllr Gary Taylor, we have launched this petition to call on Devon County Council to allocate the necessary budget and resources to make this happen. The past weeks have shown that a Zebra crossing is the only safe and reliable solution that will force traffic to slow down and stop. It's the best solution for the safety of our children and the community.
