Community Statement: Brownedge Lane Zebra Crossing Petition Meeting

A public meeting was held this evening to discuss the ongoing petition calling for the installation of a zebra crossing on Brownedge Lane in Bamber Bridge. We would like to thank every resident, parent, and community member who attended and contributed to the discussion. Your continued support and commitment to improving safety in our area are invaluable.

During the meeting, representatives from the council addressed the concerns raised by residents. Unfortunately, the council confirmed that there are currently no plans to install a crossing on Brownedge Lane, citing a lack of available funding.

In a deeply disappointing turn, council representatives shifted the focus away from road safety and instead placed partial blame on children’s behaviour, suggesting that the issue is not with infrastructure but with how young people are using the road. Furthermore, it was stated that pressures on council budgets from Adult Social Care and Children’s Social Care are limiting their ability to fund new road safety measures — effectively pitting one vital community service against another.

We find this response unacceptable and remain committed to advocating for the safety of our children and all residents. The community deserves better, and we will continue to push for the measures needed to protect pedestrians on Brownedge Lane.

Thank you again to everyone who showed up and made their voices heard. This is just the beginning.
