The Issue

This week, a devastating fatality accident occurred at the intersection of S Western and SW 154th in Oklahoma City. This tragedy has left our community in mourning and highlights the pressing need for improvements to be made at this dangerous intersection. It’s a place I pass frequently, and each time I do, I am reminded of the lives at stake with every near miss and accident.

S Western and SW 154th is notorious for its high accident rate, causing undue stress and danger to all who travel through it. According to traffic data available from the Oklahoma City authorities, this intersection has one of the highest frequencies of traffic incidents in our area. The absence of a traffic signal is a critical oversight, contributing directly to these unsafe conditions.

Our city’s residents deserve safe streets, and yet, every day, we face a gamble with our lives as we navigate through this hazardous crossing. The implementation of a traffic signal here is not just a preventative measure for future accidents but an affirmation of value for human life and community wellbeing.

I am asking the Oklahoma City Council to undertake a thorough evaluation of this intersection with urgency. It is imperative that steps be taken to install a much-needed traffic signal to manage the heavy flow of vehicles effectively and safely. Statistics from cities that have installed street signals in similarly busy intersections reveal a significant reduction in accidents and fatalities—this is a proven solution we need to adopt.

As residents of Oklahoma City, it is within our rights to demand safer roads. We cannot allow another senseless death to occur at S Western and SW 154th. By signing this petition, you help send a clear message to our city officials that the safety of our community is paramount. Let us urge them to act now before another life is lost.
