Install a Traffic Signal at Route 6 & Haas Road in Mokena — Before Someone Dies

Install a Traffic Signal at Route 6 & Haas Road in Mokena — Before Someone Dies

The Issue

Target: Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT), District 1

We, the residents of Mokena and the surrounding community, are calling on the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) to conduct an urgent traffic signal warrant study and install a traffic control signal at the intersection of U.S. Route 6 and Haas Road in Mokena, Illinois.

This intersection is dangerous — and the data proves it.

Official IDOT crash records show 15 crashes at this location between 2019 and 2024, injuring 3 people. That averages more than 2 crashes per year, every year, for six straight years. And it's getting worse — the most recent injury crash in 2024 was serious enough that IDOT's own investigators cited road engineering defects as the cause.

Here's why this intersection is so hazardous:

🔴 The road approaches at an angle — not a standard 90-degree intersection. This forces drivers to look at an extreme angle to check for oncoming traffic on Route 6, drastically reducing their reaction time.

🔴 A small bridge on the Haas Road approach physically blocks the view of oncoming Route 6 traffic. Drivers cannot see what is coming until they are already entering the intersection.

🔴 Route 6 is a high-speed arterial highway. There is almost no margin for error.

🔴 The stop sign currently in place has failed. 5 of the 15 documented crashes happened with a stop sign present and functioning.

🔴 40% of crashes occurred in the dark — the intersection has inadequate lighting.

Residents of Hunt Club Woods & Hunt Club Meadows subdivision use Haas Road as their primary access to and from their homes every single day. Families, children, and seniors have no choice but to navigate this intersection. It is only a matter of time before a crash here turns fatal.

IDOT's own crash data satisfies the criteria for a formal signal warrant review under the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) Warrant 7 — Crash Experience. We are not asking for something unreasonable. We are asking IDOT to follow its own standards and protect the lives of Illinois residents.

We are asking IDOT to:

  1. Conduct an immediate traffic signal warrant study at Route 6 & Haas Road
  2. Install a traffic control signal upon confirmation of need
  3. Implement interim safety improvements (better lighting, warning signs, speed feedback) while the study is conducted
