The Issue

The intersection of Route 2 and Big 7 Mile Rd in Lesage, West Virginia, has become increasingly hazardous over recent years due to a significant surge in traffic volume. This location, crucial for daily commuters and the local community, is facing substantial risk, particularly during peak hours. The current traffic flow is not only leading to congestion but is also putting lives in danger.

One of the key contributors to this increased traffic is the ongoing development and operations associated with the Nucor Corporation facility further along Route 2. As a major industrial hub, this facility attracts numerous vehicles daily, adding to the already high traffic flow on Route 2.

Furthermore, the proximity to the local elementary school further exacerbates the situation. The intersection serves regular school bus traffic, in addition to parent drop-off and pick-up activities. During these peak school times, the lack of a traffic signal creates limited safe gaps for vehicles to turn onto Route 2. This situation is perilous for school buses, parents, and children, exposing them to unnecessary risks during what should be routine and safe commutes.

Complicating matters are the growing number of near-miss incidents and actual accidents at this critical juncture. Each of these incidents not only endangers lives but also signifies the urgent necessity for intervention.

We urge the local government and transportation authorities to prioritize the installation of a traffic signal at this intersection. A traffic signal would regulate the flow of traffic effectively, provide safe crossing opportunities for pedestrians, and significantly reduce the occurrence of accidents. It is a scalable solution that will grow with the community and development demands around this area.

As concerned residents and commuters of Lesage, WV, we call upon the decision-makers to address this critical safety issue immediately. A traffic signal would transform this dangerous intersection into a safer, more organized segment of our community's road network.

Please join us in urging government officials to act promptly in installing a traffic signal at the intersection of Route 2 and Big 7 Mile Rd. Your signature today could help prevent future accidents and ensure a safer route for everyone who lives, works, and learns in our community. Sign this petition and show your support for a safer Lesage.

Thank you for reaching out and for sharing the concerns of so many community members. I appreciate the engagement and understand how important the safety of Route 2 and Big 7 Mile Rd is to everyone in Lesage. I will be glad to help facilitate the installation of the stop light at this intersection if the Department of Highways (DOH) approves the project. Ultimately, though, the decision rests with them, as they determine the final steps and requirements for traffic signal installations. If there are any updates from DOH or additional ways I can support this effort, please let me know. Thanks again for keeping the lines of communication open and for your commitment to community safety.
