The Issue

Southwest 154th and Western is a critical area in need of immediate attention before yet another tragic accident occurs. This intersection is a death trap waiting to happen. It's a personal issue because I've witnessed the reckless driving and the inevitable accidents that follow. Losing a young motorcycle driver recently was the last straw for our community.

Time and again, I have observed vehicles leaving the light at 149th and speeding southbound on Western Avenue, often ignoring the need for caution and safety. The absence of a traffic signal at this busy intersection contributes to this dangerous behavior. This problem has been persistent, with numerous accidents, the exact count of which has become far too many to overlook.

Installing a traffic light at Southwest 154th and Western could significantly improve safety, slow down traffic, and reduce the number of accidents. Traffic lights are proven to decrease the number of motorists speeding and to mitigate collision risks, providing a systematic flow of vehicles and greater safety for everyone, including pedestrians.

Local studies and data available echo this urgent need. According to the World Health Organization, traffic control measures like traffic lights can reduce the risk of accidents involving vehicles and pedestrians by up to 25%. Furthermore, the U.S. Department of Transportation highlights that areas with installed traffic signals have seen significant reductions in both pedestrian casualties and vehicular collisions.

I urge the city council and local transportation authorities to prioritize the safety of our residents and commuters by installing a traffic light at our neighborhood's perilous intersection. We cannot afford more deaths; this preventive measure could save lives and offer peace of mind to our community members who simply wish to travel without fear.

Please sign this petition to demand the installation of a traffic light at Southwest 154th and Western. Together, we can make a difference and protect our community from further tragedies.
