Hi Everyone,
I wanted to share a comprehensive update on our petition for improved traffic safety along the Bay corridor, including new information following additional questions raised.
Long-Term Corridor Improvements: The City’s transportation team has completed an analysis and believes that upcoming “Bay Corridor design improvements” will address many of the safety concerns we’ve raised. Here’s what’s currently planned:
The project is about 60% through the design phase, with final design expected later this year
Construction is anticipated to begin in 2027
From High to Nobel, proposed changes include:
- Reducing traffic from two lanes to one lane to help slow vehicle speeds
- Installing separated and protected bike lanes with physical barriers
- Adding transit boarding islands for safer public transportation access
These changes are intended to calm traffic and improve overall safety, but they are still several years away.
Meder Street Intersection Concerns: During the most recent correspondence I specifically raised concerns about the difficulty and danger of turning left from Meder onto High Street toward campus. As many of you know, visibility is limited, especially due to trees in the median, forcing drivers to make multiple risky judgments across oncoming traffic.
The City acknowledged this issue and shared that they are currently developing potential modifications to improve cross traffic at Meder Street. Before presenting options publicly, they are evaluating them to ensure they meet emergency access needs as well as everyday traffic flow.
They expect to follow up within the next two weeks with more concrete proposals.
Short-Term / Interim Safety Measures: I also asked about immediate steps that could improve safety before construction begins, such as:
- Speed bumps
- Stop signs or caution lights
- Improved pedestrian visibility or lighting
While no specific interim measures have been confirmed yet, the City is actively considering what may be feasible in the near term.
What This Means: This is progress, but it also highlights a gap. While long-term improvements are underway, current safety concerns remain, especially at Meder Street and along this corridor more broadly.
I will continue to follow up with the City particularly around:
- Proposed changes to the Meder Street intersection
- The possibility and timeline for interim safety measures
Additionally, if there are questions or concerns you have please send those to me and I will carry them into the next discussion.
As always, please continue to share your experiences, concerns, and any incidents you witness. This collective documentation strengthens our advocacy and keeps attention on the need for safer conditions now, not just in the future.
Thank you all for your continued engagement!
Your Neighbor,
Chari
