Every day, children in Potsdam risk their lives simply trying to get to school. The intersection at Clinton Street and Lawrence Avenue is one of the most dangerous in our town, and it sits just down the street from both the elementary and middle schools. It lacks a traffic light or any effective traffic control measures, despite being a known high-risk crossing.

My daughter was nearly hit by a truck at this very intersection just days ago. The crosswalk was blocked by an SUV, forcing her to go around. At that moment, a pickup truck turned onto Clinton and came within inches of hitting her. This near-tragedy is not unique—another child was previously struck here and had to be airlifted to Syracuse. We are living on borrowed time.

We call on our local, county, and state leaders, as well as the New York State Department of Transportation, to install a traffic light and implement additional pedestrian safety measures immediately. We do not want to wait until a fatal accident occurs to take action.
