Install a traffic light at Avonia Road and Oakwilde Drive
The Issue
Why This Light Is Needed
Safety Risks: This busy intersection is the one and only crossing from Evergreen Farms - a neighborhood of 128 homes - to the Fairview District Schools (Elementary, Middle, and High). Currently, there is only a crosswalk with flashing lights that are turned on by pedestrians hitting a button on either side of the street. These flashing lights have proven to be ineffective in even slowing traffic, let alone stopping it so that pedestrians – many of whom are children – can safely cross.
Past Incidents: On Wednesday, August 19, 2026, two children were struck by a vehicle in that crosswalk. They had hit the button to initiate the flashing lights, waited for cars to stop, and proceeded – two from one side of the street, one from the other – into the crosswalk. A car still ran through the flashing lights and hit two of the three children. Both were taken to local hospitals – one via life-flight helicopter – and were fortunate to be discharged with concussions, bruises and scrapes, and one with sutures in his arm.
High Traffic: All of the Fairview Schools are in this one area, causing a high number of vehicles passing through this intersection. Avonia Road is also a state highway and is a main thoroughfare from I-90 to various areas of Fairview Township. The speed limit at that intersection is 35mph except during school hours, at which time it drops to 15mph. The speed limit coming from I-90 toward the school zone has a speed limit of 45mph until just before the school zone though. Many drivers are going well over 45mph when they get to the school zone with nothing to cause them to slow down. Children from Evergreen Farms cross that intersection year-round to get to the community playground on the school campus and the flashing lights by the crosswalk are not always easy to see, so protections need to be in place for them outside of school hours.
Community Need: Adding a streetlight to that intersection will stop traffic completely to allow for safe crossing for our children as well as other pedestrian traffic. It will also serve as a deterrent to speeding. We ask that PennDOT review this area, approve the installation, and put in a new streetlight as soon as possible. Our children deserve your attention and your protection.
Please sign this petition to demand that PennDOT prioritizes the safety of Fairview residents. Your support can push for this essential change and protect future generations. Together, we can create a safer environment for everyone in our community.
