As a local resident who drives through Mineola Ave in Miller Place twice daily, I am deeply concerned about the safety of our community. The absence of a Traffic light in this area of 25a, has led to numerous accidents, some being fatal. The installation of a Traffic light would not only slow down drivers but also significantly reduce the risk of accidents. Furthermore, there is an urgent need for a crosswalk for residents wanting to access local shops and offices across 25a.

We have reached out to the town of Brookhaven , they mailed us a letter needing a petition , a say from the community residents wanting this traffic light. So here we are! 

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), pedestrian fatalities due to traffic accidents have been on the rise in recent years. In 2018 alone, there were 6,283 pedestrian deaths nationwide - the highest it's been since 1990 (source: NHTSA). A well-lit street can decrease these numbers by providing better visibility for both drivers and pedestrians.

Moreover, crosswalks are proven to increase pedestrian safety by alerting motorists that they are approaching an area where pedestrians may be present (source: Federal Highway Administration).

For these reasons, we urge our local government officials in Miller Place to install both a traffic light at Mineola Ave and establish a safe crosswalk across highway 25a. This action will greatly enhance safety measures in our community and potentially save lives.
